Notes

  • Box label reads 丹波國持産 本山青砥 鑪山元 — identifying this stone as Tanba-region Aoto from Yariyama.
  • Stone stamp reads 天然青砥専用 (natural Aoto, dedicated use) with the Tanaka Toishi (田中砥石) dealer mark.
  • Five sides are lacquered, consistent with traditional preparation for retail sale; the working face is left bare stone. Natural stone color is grey/green under the lacquer.

Condition

  • Stone: Working face is bare stone (unlacquered) and in clean, well-preserved condition. Five sides carry a lacquer coating, consistent with the stone's original preparation.
  • Please review the pictures of this stone prior to purchase. Make sure to closely check the raking light photograph to examine the features of the working face. When in doubt, contact Pacific Waterstone.

Everything we carry comes from the personal collection of Ken Schwartz — the sharpener behind Precise Sharpening, who built the Nubatama line and gathered the naturals that sat beside it on his bench. The synthetics are new and unused. The naturals were his.
