Nubatama Coarse Whetstone Set - #150 #220 #320 #1000H #1000HH + Dressing Stone
If a chisel, plane iron, or knife has taken real damage — a chip, a rolled edge, a badly dished-out back — you don't reach for a fine stone. You reach for this set. These five genuine Nubatama waterstones — the discontinued import line built by Ken Schwartz of Precise Sharpening and praised across sharpening forums for aggressive cutting and slow dishing — take an edge from damaged all the way to sharp: coarse repair, bevel cleanup, and finally a true working edge at #1000 grit, with a bonus dressing stone thrown in to keep every stone in the set performing like new.
Individual value — taken directly from Ken Schwartz's own posted Nubatama retail price list: Bamboo 150 Orange $70.84 · #220 $56.35–$63.76 · Bamboo 320 Platinum $103.04 · Ume 1000 Hard $61.18 · Ume 1000 Double Hard $61.18 · dressing stone ~$12 — about $365 combined. At $327.95 — roughly $37 off (about 10%) versus buying each stone individually — this is a real chance to pick up a full coarse-through-sharpening progression from a discontinued, sought-after line in one purchase.
About This Set
This is a hand-matched repair-to-sharpening progression, not a generic bundle. These stones were imported to the U.S. by Ken Schwartz under his "Nubatama" house brand — there was never a company called Nubatama; it was Ken's own name for stones he sourced and distributed. The underlying manufacturer's mark on the packaging identifies genuine Japanese production (Kamejirushi / 亀印, by Fuchioka). New in original box and original factory wrapping. Together these five grits carry an edge from serious damage all the way to a clean, sharp, usable working edge — no finishing stone required to put this blade back to work.
What's Included
The starting point for serious damage: rapid steel removal for flattening dished tool backs and repairing severe chips or heavily damaged bevels. One of the most highly praised stones in the entire Nubatama lineup.
Refines the surface after #150 work, smoothing out heavy scratch patterns and bringing the bevel into a clean, even shape before moving toward medium grits.
The bridge stone — a denser, less porous formulation than the Ume 320, removing the last of the #220 scratch pattern and leaving a surface ready for #1000-grit sharpening.
Sets the working bevel and establishes a genuinely sharp, usable edge. The denser Hard formulation resists dishing under pressure, holding its shape longer than a standard-density stone.
The densest of the #1000 grades — built to hold flat under heavy downward pressure, ideal for flattening chisel backs or plane blades without dishing the stone itself.
Genuine Japanese-made dressing stone (Kamejirushi manufacture) — used to unglaze, remove swarf, and refresh the surface of your waterstones as you work.
